From May 7th to 8th, 2018, the China-Japan Joint Workshop on Frontiers of Systematic Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing was held in the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Xi'an Jiaotong University. Participants include well-known experts, scholars, and business representatives from Japan and China. The conference aims to exchange scientific research frontiers, technological developments and engineering cases in the field of biomass energy and synthesis, provide opportunities to share and discuss relevant issues and experience exchanges, and discuss new ways of research collaboration.

The meeting was hosted by Prof. Fei Qiang, Professor of Chemical Engineering, Xi'an Jiaotong University, and Dean Wei Jinjia gave a speech at the opening ceremony. Professor Akihiko Kondo from Kobe University, Professor Taizo Hanai from Kyushu University, Professor Katsutoshi Hori from Nagoya University, Professor Toshiaki Fukui from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Professor Xing Xinhui from Tsinghua University, Professor Xu Feng from Xi'an Jiaotong University, Professor Fang Wei from Shandong University, South China University of Technology Professor Lin Ying and Professor Yang Song of Qingdao Agricultural University gave special reports on issues related to biomass energy and synthesis. In addition, guests attending the conference included Dr. Xue Wenjiao, Director of the Research Center for Microbial Metabolites, Shaanxi Institute of Microbiology, and Dr. Meng Gang, Director of R&D, Ningxia Yipin Biotechnology Co., Ltd.

First of all, Zhang Zaoxiao, Branch Party Secretary of the SCET, Xi'an Jiaotong University, presented a certificate of appointment to Professor Akihiko Kondo. He expressed his gratitude to Professor Kondo for his contribution to the SCET. At the same time, he is hoped that the two sides will continue to maintain good cooperation, achieve mutually beneficial cooperation and resource sharing, and establish an international cooperation and exchange platform between China and Japan at an early date.

The conference focused on the application and research strategies of biotechnology and manufacturing in synthetic biology, biorefinery and biomass energy development. Experts discussed the application of microbial cell factories in joint bioprocessing, application of synthetic biotechnology in chemical production, application of adherent fibrin AtaA, new opportunities in biocatalysis, modification of cellulase and application in biorefinery, application of UDP-glycosyltransferase in tandem with sucrose synthase and its synthesis of in stevia, application of intelligent integrated biological breeding systems in bionic manufacturing, and so on. More than 10 participating scholars from relevant institutions at home and abroad shared wonderful academic reports and engaged in heated discussions, providing valuable frontier research ideas and achievements for the development and breakthrough of applied biotechnology.
The successful convening of the China-Japanese joint Workshop on Frontiers of biotechnology and bio-manufacturing will further enhance the influence of our school in the industry and play a good role in promoting scientific research cooperation and healthy development in the field of applied biotechnology in China and the world. The conference aims to achieve the collision of academic thinking in the industry through China-Japan academic exchanges, promote the rapid development of domestic biotechnology and biosynthesis, facilitate the internationalization of biochemical research in the Institute of Chemical Engineering, seek international academic support for construction of the discipline and enhance the international reputation of the Institute of Chemical Engineering. Finally, it provides a new way of thinking for the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology and lays a good international foundation for future academic and student exchanges.
Chinese and Japanese experts conducted in-depth discussions on relevant issues after the meeting
After the meeting, Japanese experts visited the main campus of Jiaotong University, the digital exhibition hall of Innovation Port, the key laboratory of Shaanxi Province's energy and chemical process strengthening, the analysis and testing center of the Chemical Engineering Institute, the biochemical laboratory and other laboratory and research groups accompanied by the teachers of our school. During the visit, scholars and students conducted in-depth discussions and answered questions about microbial metabolic pathway design, biosynthesis of chemicals, and directed mutation of microorganisms. Through this zero-distance communication method, the students were helped to solve many problems in the scientific research process.
